Altun Ha
Altun Ha is the modern Mayan translation of the nearby village of Rockstone Pond, literally "Water of the Rock". The site covers 5 square miles, with nearly 500 structures found so far. Occupied from around 200 BC, the bulk of the construction happened between 200 and 900 AD, with it's peak population upwards of 10,000 people. Evidence of looting around 900 AD suggests a revolt against the site's rulers.
Stones from the site were reused for some of the residential construction in Rockstone Pond, which was formed sometime after a 12th century surge in reoccupation of the area.
Excavations began from 1965 through 1970 by Dr. David Pendergast. There, he found the largest Mayan jade stone head ever found: 6 inches tall, carved in the image of the Mayan sun god, Kinich Ahau, and weighing in at nearly 10 pounds.
The largest temple on site is the Temple of the Masonry Altars, standing 54 feet tall.
